AP News Registry Services Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to The Associated Press (“AP” or “we” or “us” or "our"). This Privacy Policy discloses our practices with respect to the collection, use, and disclosure of information in connection with our News Registry service. To learn about the AP’s information practices in other contexts, please visit our general Privacy Policy.

What information is collected by the News Registry Services?

The AP News Registry provides services that allow participating news publishers (and their partners) to understand how their content is used on the Internet so that they can improve their news coverage and make better decisions with respect to their content. Content covered by this service includes AP stories, participating news publishers’ own stories and other content, and third-party content (but not advertising) that appears on a participating publisher’s website (each, and collectively, “Covered Content”). The service facilitates such understanding by collecting information about you as described below to determine how you, the end user, view and otherwise interact with Covered Content when you are online. The way this works, and your choices with respect to this service, are described in more detail below.

Clear GIF Images and Cookies

Our News Registry service allows AP to determine which Covered Content is read, when it is read, and the websites where it is read. We do this by placing a tag, or clear GIF image, on the Covered Content on the websites of publishers who participate in the AP News Registry. When users open Covered Content, the clear GIF images tell us that your browser has requested the Covered Content. At the same time, we set a cookie on your browser. A cookie is a small data file that contains a string of characters, including an anonymous unique browser identifier. The cookie allows us to correlate your uses of Covered Content across the websites of publishers who participate in the AP News Registry.

Log Information

Each time you request a web page that contains Covered Content, our server records information that your browser sends to it. This includes the identifier of the cookie that we have previously set on your browser (if you have one), which uniquely identifies your browser, the identifier associated with the Covered Content, the URL of the page where you viewed the Covered Content, your Internet Protocol address (which we use to infer your general geographic location), your browser and operating system types, and the date and time of your request of the Covered Content.

End User Communications

When you send email or other communications to us, we retain those communications in order to process your inquiries, to respond to your communications, and to improve our services. We do not use information contained in your communications to us for any marketing purpose.

What do we do with the information we collect?

In General

We use the information that we collect to analyze how Covered Content is used. We also use it for auditing and research purposes, in order to maintain, protect, and improve our services, or to develop new services. In addition, we may use it to protect our rights or property, or those of our customers, or end users.

Aggregate Reports and Consulting Services

We may also use the information we collect to generate and publish aggregate reports on usage of Covered Content and to provide consulting services to participating news publishers (and their partners). For example, we may use the information we collect to help an owner or publisher of Covered Content improve its services by creating or publishing different types of content, or by publishing content that will attract more visitors and, therefore, make the partner’s website more attractive to advertisers.

Personalized Content and Interest-Based Advertising

At some point in the future, we and our partners may also use the information AP collects to deliver personalized content or interest-based advertisements to you. If we engage in these activities, we will do so under the industry best practices and self-regulatory programs as they exist at that time. Please note that we will not use your sensitive data, such as your personal financial or health data, information regarding children, or any type of government identifier; nor will we use your race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or political affiliation to determine what type of content or advertisement to deliver to you.
